Festive mood has gripped the Ladakh region ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Leh on Saturday.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to join the 100th birth anniversary celebrations of Kushok Bakula Rinpoche, the architect of modern Ladakh, and to lay the foundation stone of the Asia’s longest (14.2-km) bi-directional Zojila tunnel, connecting Kashmir’s Sonmarg with the Gumri area in Kargil district, through remote control.
Since taking over the reins of the country, this will be the second visit of the Prime Minister to the strategically important Ladakh region that shares vast border with China and Pakistan. Earlier, Modi had visited the region to inaugurate the Leh-Kargil-Srinagar transmission line and an NHPC power project on August 12, 2014.
Rigzin Norbu from the Skara area in Leh said the PM’s visit was a great honour to the Buddhist leader and Ladakh. “We hope Modi will look into problems of Ladakh and announce something for the youth,” Nobru said.
Religious organisations, including Ladakh Buddhist Association, Anjuman Imamia, Anjuman Moin-ul Islam, and Christian Association of Ladakh have come together to make the PM’s visit a grand event.
Ladakh Buddhist Association’s Rinchan Namgial said they were mobilising people to attend the function. Wide publicity is being given to the event through loud speakers and other media, like local radio.
